A New Website

Being on parental leave for nearly a year has got me thinking about my work life. I often took for granted the free time I had when I wasn’t a mom. Now that that’s in the distant past, I told myself that I’d use the (little) free time I have to work on my website.

Why do I need a new website?

I moved to a new country

This has led to a lot of changes in my life like having new friends, a new job, and a new perspective. I’ve learnt so much in the past five years about who I am and what I want to be doing in life. I mean, it’s never entirely clear what one wants to be doing in life but an inner guidance is a good enough direction.

…and I’ve grown as a person

When I look at my old work, I’m proud and happy and also see my journey but I find myself drawn to the idea of not just making my website about design but rather about all the meaningful pursuits in my life. I want to, through this space, attempt to connect the dots and see how different practices inform one another. I am also much clearer about my values and want to highlight them as part of my journey.

I like new stuff

It’s been six years (or more?) since my last website and that is a very long time in the lifespan of a designer. I feel like aesthetics and trends are constantly changing and despite not adhering to them, I do think a refresh every now and then doesn’t hurt anybody.

Dark mode & other cool things

With this new website framework, I’m much more flexible in presenting my case studies and I’m able to use different colour themes. There are also some nice animation effects that I can play around with and I’m now directly able to host videos here on Squarespace instead of linking to third-party hosts (with annoying frames that ruin the flow of a case study).

What next?

Dropping the long name, perhaps

I’m also playing with the idea of dropping my full name and getting a shorter domain name. While it’s already hard enough to get people to spell the one I have correctly, it’s quite a mouthful here in Germany.

Moving to Webflow, maybe

I used Squarespace for this version of my website. While I think the platform is cool, I’d really like to check out Webflow as I’ve seen some great websites done on it. Right now, I wanted to prioritise publishing my work so I used what I knew well. But who knows what lies in the future :)
